一、培养目标

 本专业硕士学位点,旨在培养能胜任高等学校英语专业、非英语专业和各门英语课程的教学以及为国家经济建设、外事等工作服务的高级专门人才。本专业培养的硕士生应具有系统而扎实的英语语言基础理论和基础知识,较为广博的相关学科的基础知识,了解国内外本专业及其交叉学科的最新发展,熟练掌握英语听、说、读、写、译等实践技能,掌握外国语言学与应用语言学的基础研究方法,热爱祖国、热爱社会主义,有纪律、有道德、有理想,思维创新,有独立分析问题和解决问题的能力。

二、学习年限

全日制攻读硕士学位研究生学习年限一般为三年。

非全日制攻读硕士学位研究生学习年限一般为四年。

五、教学实践

 教学实践是培养和检验研究生实践能力的一门重要课程,要求研究生在导师或主讲教师亲自指导下于第五学期参加一学期的教学实践活动,包括教学全过程的各个环节,如讲课、答疑、习题批改、辅导课等。在导师或主讲教师的指导下,学会如何撰写教案,如何授课、辅导、答疑等教学能力。并对研究生教授课程及其它教学实践活动做出公正、客观评价。

六.社会实践及学术活动

 社会实践活动是研究生在学期间接触社会,了解社会的重要实践活动,要求研究生在学期间积极参加校、院系组织的各种社会调查活动、导师组织的科研实践活动,如研究生论文选题前的调研等。要求研究生在学期间积极参加学术活动,如参加学术讲座和学术讨论会、定期做读书报告、撰写学位论文开题报告等。按学校规定,研究生在学期间至少正式发表一篇论文,有条件的还要争取在学习期间参加国际学术会议。

七、学位论文

 研究生学位论文是培养研究生科学研究和创新能力,以及独立分析问题和解决问题能力的重要组成部分。研究生撰写学位论文应达到以下要求:

1.应在导师指导下制定论文工作计划,并经主管部门同意方可进行。

2.论文的选题应在导师的指导下师生共同商定。论文的选题要注重基础理论研究,考虑学科的最新发展,做到学术理论与实用价值相结合。

3.研究生撰写学位论文期间,导师应定期指导、检查学位论文进展情况,共同协商解决难题,注重对学生创新意识和独立科学研究能力的培养。

4.研究生在导师指导下独立完成学位论文的全过程。学位论文要观点正确、概念清楚,研究方法正确、数据可靠、分析严谨,例证翔实,语言规范、准确,有个人独立或创新的见解。

5.论文要用英文撰写。

6.论文答辩。研究生修完培养方案中所规定的各门课程,考试合格,并且学分符合要求后,按学校有关规定进行论文答辩。

 

八、培养方法

1.首先,在第一学年内完成主要学位课程和本学科的主要基础理论课程,并在导师指导下确定研究方向。然后,导师根据培养方案与研究方向分别定出具体学习计划。

2.研究生各门必修课和选修课的学习应采取灵活多样的教学方法,如导师讲授、共同讨论、自学等,注重培养学生的自学能力。

3.积极提倡研究生参加校内外的学术活动,加强学术交流,定期举办专题学术讲座。充分发挥学生学术上创新意识的培养,注重对学生分析问题和解决问题能力的培养。

Course Description(课程简介):

 This course is designed to offer to graduate students a general look at the scientific study of language and its major scope. With a brief introduction to the history of linguistics as the beginning, this course presents some basic theories in the study of theoretical linguistics, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and so on, followed by some of the applied linguistics. The followings are mainly discussed in this course: features of language; brief history of linguistics; English history; articulatory phonetics; structuralist and generative phonology; brief introduction to semantics and pragmatics; general look at some of the applied linguistics.

 This course is given in the first term. It is specially profitable and necessary to those who have taken no undergraduate course of linguistics. With the knowledge gained from this course, students will feel free to go into any specific branch of linguistics and then do their best in their research. It is also a great help to those who will do research work other than linguistics. The main topics are due to be completed within 40 hours.

Course Description(课程简介):

 This course aims at exposing students to various concepts and approaches on foreign language teaching so that students may view foreign language teaching from different angles. The program, though including a brief introduction to different approaches of English teaching in past 100 years, focuses on the study of language learning strategies, learning process and learners" language and other learning problems. Both the tutor and the students will endeavor to explore the nature and the principles of language teaching, especially the communicative teaching approach and the theories behind it as well as its applicability in China"s teaching environment.

 As a matter of fact, the program itself will be conducted in the communicative way, so the participants are encouraged to be actively involved in all kinds of teaching and learning activities inside and outside the classroom. With the help of a sense of lectures, workshops, discussions and case studies, the course tries to achieve its goal from two perspectives: theoretical and practical.

Course Description(课程简介):

 This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the standard theory of generative phonology (SPE theory). It first sets phonology in the overall model of generative grammar. Background knowledge in phonetics is provided and a set of the most commonly used distinctive features is introduced. It then dwells on the fundamental concepts of levels of representation and phonological rule and shows how these concepts are used in phonological analysis. Major notational devices in formulating a phonological rule are introduced in this section. Then it treats the corpus-internal principles and techniques of phonological analysis and the corpus-external evidence used in this analysis. Finally, the role of syntactic and lexical information is examined.

 A goodly portion of the course is devoted to the presentation of sample analyses taken from a diverse set of languages. The discussion of these analyses illustrates most of basic principles and techniques of phonological description and the different ways of argumentation needed to support a given analysis.

 It is our aim that the student will acquire a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts of the standard theory of generative phonology and an ability to apply these concepts to the further study of phonological structure.

 Generative syntax is mainstream of modern linguistics.This course aims to introduce basic concepts and operations of generative syntax.The course will mainly discuss the Government-Binding Model and the Minimalist Program. The following concepts and operations will be touched upon: Universal Grammar, X-bar Theory, Government, Binding, Case, NP-Movement, WH-Movement, Empty Categories, Barriers, Checking, VP-Shell, Operator Movement.Some analyses of Chinese structures will also be introduced.Students are expected to participate actively in discussion in class and required to finish their homework.They are also required to write a term paper, and take one mid-term quiz and one final exam.

Course Description(课程简介):

 Semantics is one of the three major components in linguistics. In general it is the study of meaning, including: the study of how meaning is constructed, interpreted, clarified, obscured, illustrated, simplified, negotiated, contradicted and paraphrased. Since meaning reflects thinking process in the human beings minds and the objective fact so the study of meaning are not only related with the study of language, but also with people and the society as well as the speech context. So meaning is not only a linguistic problem but is also a central issue in philosophy, psychology, anthropology, sociology, semiotics, jurisprudence and theology, cognition, literary critic, logic and mathematics. In philosophy, semantics has generally followed the lead of symbolic logic, and many philosophers do not make a distinction between logic and semantics. In this context, semantics is concerned with such issues as meaning and truth, meaning and thought, and the relation between signs and what they mean. Semantics has also become important to literary criticism and stylistics, in which the way that metaphors evoke feelings is investigated and differences between ordinary and literary language are studied. So for language majors, an understanding of semantics is very necessary, important and essential to the theoretical linguistic study, to the study of language acquisition and to the study of language change.

 Sociolinguistics has become an important and popular field of study, as certain cultures around the world expand their communication base and inter-group and inter-personal relations take on escalating significance. This course deals with the scientific study of language in relation to society. As an introductory course, it is to familiarize the students with the topics concerned with the study of language in its social context. It is to encourage further discussion and research in the field of their own interest. It is also intended to provide the students with a sound basic knowledge of most of the topics dealt with sociolinguistics. The course is divided into four major aspects: 1. Course Description(课程简介):

 The Study of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research program prepares qualified students for teaching careers in education and other subjects. The students who complete the program are expected to broaden and deepen their knowledge and understanding of comprehensive and accessible information in the field of second language acquisition. It contains the following subjects: (1) a general framework for the study of second language acquisition; (2) a general description of learner language; (3) the account for the role of the linguistic environment, the learner external factors and internal mechanisms; (4) individual differences in language learning; and (5) the expanding research on classroom second language acquisition.

 The understanding of the description and explanation of the program"s objectives is most likely for students to catch the essence of three major questions: (1) How do learners learn a second language? (2) Why do learners vary in the speed when they learn a second language? (3) Why do most learners fail to achieve full target-language competence? Hopefully students, armed with the profound and up-to-date knowledge in the program, are supposed to develop an ability to collect and analyze a sample in the language concerned, to describe and interpret the interlanguage, to evaluate and assess the research methods getting involved, and to get well informed and be able to appreciate both the past and resent theoretical developments in its fields respectively.
